12th February 2012 Sydney

Award-winning American playwright, performer, feminist and human rights activist Eve Ensler will be visiting UNSW to attend the Justice for All Conference and associated workshop and to give the Australian Human Rights Centre (AHRCentre) Annual Public Lecture.

The Nelson Meers Foundation is delighted to be supporting Ms Ensler’s visit to Australia. Ms Ensler’s performance lecture, “Until the Violence Stops”, will take place on 12 February 2012 at 6pm at the Sydney Theatre. Proceeds from the lecture will go towards supporting the work of the Australian Human Rights Centre.

Best known for her play The Vagina Monologues, Ms Ensler is also renowned as a writer and rights advocate, focussing in particular on violence against women in situations of conflict.

The topic of Ms Ensler’s lecture will be using theatre as a mechanism for giving visibility to human rights abuse and promotion, focusing on her work on women and girls in conflict situations. She will also be conducting a Masterclass for playwrights whilst she is in Sydney.

Picasso Masterpieces from the Musee National Picasso, Paris

Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney

12 November 2011 to 25 March 2012

This is the most significant Picasso exhibition ever to come to Australia. Part of a world tour, the Art Gallery of NSW is the only Australian venue. Made possible by the closure of the Musée National Picasso for renovations, this is likely to be the only opportunity to see Picasso’s work on this scale in Australia. These are ‘Picasso’s Picassos’ – the works from his own collection that he left to shape his legacy, which were given to the French state after his death.

The exhibition is co-organised by the Musée National Picasso, Paris, the Art Gallery of NSW and Art Exhibitions Australia. It is part of the Sydney International Art Series.

Coming home: Simone Young returns to lead an extraordinary orchestra of expats

Sydney Morning Herald, Spectrum August 6-7, 2011, story by Harriet Cunningham

"With her busy schedule, it is only a fortuitous cancellation that allows her to make a flying visit to Sydney this month for an intriguing concert. She will conduct the first performance of the Australian World Orchestra, a sort of Wallabies of classical music, made of the pick of Australian musicians working here and internationally. It is the creation of Australian conductor Alexander Briger and his sister, Gabrielle Thompson, who have spent the past two years assembling the musicians and finding the money for their dream team."
