Underbelly Arts Festival

Underbelly Arts Festival 2011 – Cockatoo Island

On July 16, 2011 Underbelly Arts 2011 brought us some of the best new works by Australia’s freshest creative talent, all in the incredible surrounds of Cockatoo Island, Sydney Harbour. We watched in awe as over 150 artists collaborated on exciting, innovative and experimental projects during the 10-day residency, The Lab, and then saw over 2000 people come to The Festival, the grande finale showing off and celebrating fruits of the artists’ hard work.

Underbelly Arts was established in 2007 as a social experiment that asked:

What would happen if you brought up to 150 artists together under the one roof for ten days to develop new work?

What would happen if you then opened this process to the public, allowing them behind the scenes of art in the making?

Projects developed in previous years have gone on to feature at events and programs around Australia including Melbourne Fringe Festival, LiveWorks, The Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Adelaide Fringe and Next Wave Festival.
