Incarceration Nation

Incarceration Nation is a documentary project exploring the systemic injustice and oppression of First Nations people that has created an Internationally recognized human rights catastrophe. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are amongst the most incarcerated people in the world: 3% of the population and 27% of prisoners. This documentary highlights the cost of our current system – both economically and socially - by forensically examining our Nation's law enforcement, judicial and prison systems.

Why did we fund this project? Incarceration can lead to loss of culture, identity and connection to the land as evidenced in PWC's research paper "Indigenous Incarceration: Unlock the facts" (see link below). The loss of culture entrenches the cycle of indigenous disadvantage, poverty and incarceration. The Nelson Meers Foundation seeks to encourage avenues through which we all can become better informed about social issues that lead to positive change.
